One ordinary photo is enough to estimate how far away everything in it is. View the depth map in grey or color, turn the photo into a moving 3D parallax image, or blur the background by distance like a wide-aperture lens.

Overview
Monocular depth estimation predicts distance from a single image, using the same cues people use with one eye closed: perspective, relative size, occlusion, texture and haze. This tool uses Depth Anything V2 Small (Apache-2.0, about 25 million parameters). It was trained on large amounts of synthetic and real imagery and produces sharp, detailed relative depth maps that hold up well on people, pets, rooms and landscapes. The output is relative, not metric: it tells you what is nearer or farther, not how many meters away it is.
The model runs through Transformers.js. On a WebGPU graphics card it uses the 16-bit version (about 50 MB) and finishes in about a second. On the CPU through WebAssembly it uses the 8-bit quantized version (about 27 MB) and takes a few seconds. The photo is analysed at up to 1,024 pixels on the long side, and the depth map is then smoothly scaled to match your image.
Three views use the same depth map. Depth shows the map in grey, the Turbo rainbow map or a warm palette, with an invert switch for 3D apps that expect far to be bright. You can download it as a PNG up to 4,096 pixels on the long side. The 3D view displaces the pixels of your photo by their depth, so near objects move more than far ones as you hover, drag, tilt your phone or let it animate. It exports as a looping 480-pixel GIF. Blur keeps one distance in focus and blurs everything else in proportion to how far it is from that plane. You set the focus distance, the size of the sharp zone and the blur strength, or click the photo to focus on a spot, then download a full-resolution JPG or PNG.
| View | Export | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Depth | PNG depth map (grey or colored, optional invert) | Up to 4,096 px on the long side |
| 3D | Looping parallax GIF, 36 frames | 480 px on the long side |
| Blur | Depth-of-field photo, JPG or PNG | Full original resolution |
Drop in a photo. The depth map is generated automatically, and the first run downloads the model once.
In Depth view, choose a color map, invert if needed and download the depth PNG.
Switch to 3D, adjust the depth strength and hover or tilt to preview, then download the GIF.
Switch to Blur, click the subject to focus and adjust the sharp zone and blur strength.
Download the blurred photo as JPG or PNG at full resolution.
Use cases
Phones without a portrait mode, or photos taken in normal mode, can still get a soft, distance-based background blur that keeps the subject sharp.
A subtle looping 3D parallax GIF makes a landscape or product photo stand out in feeds, newsletters and presentations.
Use the depth PNG as a displacement map in Blender, After Effects or a game engine, as a fog or depth-of-field pass, or to build a 2.5D camera move.
Explore how a modern depth model reads a scene. The Turbo color map makes small depth differences easy to see, which helps when choosing photos for 3D effects.
Pro tips
Answers to common questions about the depth / 3d photo.
No. Depth Anything V2 Small predicts relative depth: brighter means nearer in the default grey map. It is ideal for blur, parallax and displacement effects, but it can't measure real distances.
A single photo has no information about what is hidden behind the subject. When the view shifts, those areas have to be filled by stretching nearby pixels. Lower the depth strength to make this less visible.
Instead of a cut-out subject on a uniformly blurred background, the blur grows gradually with distance from the focus plane, so the ground and objects at different distances blur by different amounts, like a real lens.
With WebGPU the 16-bit model (about 50 MB) is used for speed. On the CPU the 8-bit quantized model (about 27 MB) is used. Either is downloaded once and cached.
The 3D view exports a looping GIF at 480 pixels on the long side, which plays everywhere, including chat apps and email. To make a video, convert the GIF with the GIF to MP4 tool.
