Drop in a photo and the subject is cut out automatically, with no pen tool and no upload. Keep it on a transparent background, put it on a solid color or blur the original scene behind it, then download a full-resolution PNG, WebP or JPG.

Overview
Background removal is a segmentation problem. A neural network looks at every pixel and estimates how likely it is to belong to the main subject, producing an alpha matte: white where the subject is, black where the background is, and gray values for soft edges such as hair, fur and motion blur. The quality of that matte is what separates a clean cutout from a jagged one with a halo around it.
Two open models are available, with Fast selected by default. Best uses BiRefNet Lite (MIT licence, about 115 MB), a high-resolution segmentation network that works at 1024 × 1024 and captures fine hair and complex outlines. It runs on your graphics card through WebGPU. Fast uses U²-Net-p (Apache-2.0, about 5 MB), a compact salient-object model that runs on any device's CPU through WebAssembly in a few seconds. If your browser has no WebGPU, or your graphics card can't run BiRefNet, the tool switches to the fast model automatically and tells you, so you always get a result.
The model looks at a copy of your photo scaled to about 1536 pixels on the long side, which is plenty for the network and keeps memory use predictable. The mask is then smoothly scaled up and applied to your original pixels, so the download keeps the photo's full resolution. Two sliders refine the edge afterwards without running the model again. Softness feathers the outline by up to 6 px, and Mask tightness either trims weak, semi-transparent pixels to remove leftover halos or keeps more of them to preserve wispy hair.
Pick the output format to suit the destination. PNG keeps lossless transparency and is the safest for design tools. WebP also supports transparency and is usually much smaller, which suits websites. JPG has no alpha channel, so a transparent result is flattened onto white, which suits marketplaces that require a plain white background.
| Best | Fast | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | BiRefNet Lite | U²-Net-p |
| Download | About 115 MB | About 5 MB |
| Licence | MIT | Apache-2.0 |
| Runs on | Graphics card (WebGPU) | Any CPU (WebAssembly) |
| Edge detail | Fine hair and complex outlines | Good on clear subjects, softer edges |
Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo onto the tool, or paste one with Ctrl+V.
Wait for the cutout. The first run downloads the AI model once, and it is cached after that.
Choose Best or Fast, then pick a transparent, solid color or blurred background.
Adjust edge softness and mask tightness if you see halos or lost hair.
Drag the comparison divider to check the edges, then download PNG, WebP or JPG.
Use cases
Amazon, eBay and many shop themes want the main image on pure white. Cut the product out, pick the white color background or download a JPG, and use the transparent PNG for banners and ads.
Put everyone on the same brand color to make mismatched office and home backgrounds consistent. Staff photos stay on your computer, which matters when you handle other people's images.
Turn a pet, a person or an object into a transparent cutout and drop it into Canva, Figma, Photoshop, a slide deck or a YouTube thumbnail.
The blur background option keeps the original scene but softens it behind the subject, which gives a phone snapshot a cleaner, portrait-like look without a studio.
Pro tips
Answers to common questions about the background remover.
Best runs BiRefNet Lite, a 115 MB model that traces hair, fur and complex outlines closely but needs WebGPU. Fast runs U²-Net-p, a 5 MB model that works on any device in seconds but gives softer, less detailed edges on difficult photos.
Some integrated graphics chips and older drivers can't run the large model in the browser. When that happens the tool retries on your CPU with the fast model, so you still get a cutout, and remembers this for next time.
No. The model works on a reduced copy, but the resulting mask is scaled up and applied to your original pixels, so the download has the same dimensions as the photo you added.
Not in this tool. You can choose transparent, a solid color or a blur of the original scene. Download a transparent PNG and place it over any image in an editor such as the layer editor.
JPG can't store transparency. When the background is set to transparent, JPG downloads are flattened onto white; choose PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
No. ToolEnhancer processes files on your own device inside the browser. They are never sent to, stored on or seen by our servers.
Yes. The background remover is free to use with no sign-up, no watermarks and no daily limits.
