You don't need a social app for silly face filters. Start your webcam, pick an effect such as sunglasses, a crown or dog ears, and it follows your face as you move. You can save snapshots, record short clips with sound, or apply the same filters to a photo you upload.

Overview
The filters are driven by MediaPipe Face Landmarker, a Google model (Apache-2.0, about 3.7 MB) that runs in the MediaPipe Tasks WebAssembly runtime in your browser. It uses the graphics card through the GPU delegate when it can and falls back to the CPU. For every camera frame it predicts 478 three-dimensional landmarks, which trace the face outline, eyes, irises, eyebrows, nose and lips, and 52 blendshape scores that measure expressions such as a smile, a blink or an open jaw. Up to four faces can be tracked at once.
Each effect is drawn with plain canvas shapes anchored to those landmarks, so it scales with your distance from the camera and tilts with your head. There are sunglasses, a crown, a striped party hat, dog ears and nose (open your mouth and a tongue appears), cat ears and whiskers, a handlebar moustache, a beard tint with stubble texture, a masquerade mask and a big-eyes effect that magnifies both eyes with a soft edge. On top of any effect you can add a colour look (warm, cool, vivid, noir or vintage), skin smoothing that keeps eyes and lips sharp, and hearts that float up whenever the smile blendshape is triggered. The Expressions panel shows the live scores.
Snapshots are saved as PNG at the camera's resolution. Clips are recorded from the canvas with the browser's MediaRecorder API, for up to 60 seconds each, optionally with your microphone. Recent versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari can record MP4 directly; Firefox records WebM. Frame rate depends on the device: a modern laptop usually tracks at or near the camera's 30 fps, while older machines on the CPU path may manage 10–20 fps.
Photo mode applies the same effects to an uploaded picture. The photo is scaled to at most 2048 pixels on the long side, every face in it gets the effect, and you download the result as a PNG. Tracking and detection work best with even, front-facing light and faces that are not covered by hands or hair.
| Effect | Anchored to | Reacts to |
|---|---|---|

| Crown, party hat | Top of the forehead | Head tilt |
| Dog | Forehead sides and nose tip | Mouth opening (tongue) |
| Moustache, beard | Upper lip, mouth corners and jawline | Mouth shape |
| Big eyes | Iris centres | Eye movement |
| Smile hearts | Forehead | Smile blendshapes |
Click Start camera and allow camera access when the browser asks.
Pick an effect from the grid, and optionally a colour look, skin smoothing or smile hearts.
Choose whether to mirror the view and how many faces to track.
Press Snapshot PNG for a still, or Record clip for up to 60 seconds, with the microphone if you like.
Switch to Photo to upload a picture instead, then download the filtered PNG.
Use cases
Record a quick filtered intro or reaction clip for a stream, a team channel or a birthday message without installing a filter app.
Hand out dog ears and party hats on a laptop at a party or in a lesson. Nothing needs an account, and the camera feed never leaves the device.
Upload a portrait and add a crown, sunglasses or a vintage look for a playful avatar, then download it as a PNG.
Watch the expression meters react as you smile, blink or raise your eyebrows to see what a face landmark model actually measures.
Pro tips
Answers to common questions about the ar face filters.
No. The landmark model runs inside the page, and frames go straight from the camera to a canvas on your device. Nothing is recorded until you press Record clip, and clips stay in the tab until you download them.
The first time, the browser downloads the 3.7 MB face model and the MediaPipe runtime. Both are cached, so later starts are almost instant and work offline.
Recording uses the browser's own MediaRecorder, and not every browser can write MP4. Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari can; Firefox records WebM, which plays in browsers and most players and can be converted to MP4 with a video converter.
Face Landmarker also returns 52 blendshape scores between 0 and 1. The dog tongue appears when the jawOpen score passes a threshold, and hearts float up when the average of the left and right smile scores is above 0.5.
Tracking needs a clearly visible face. Improve the lighting, move a little closer, keep hands away from your face and limit the number of tracked faces to the people actually in view.
No. ToolEnhancer processes files on your own device inside the browser. They are never sent to, stored on or seen by our servers.
