Steady time is the foundation of good playing. Set a tempo between 30 and 300 BPM, pick a time signature and practice against a click that does not drift, or tap the beat of a song to find its tempo.

Overview
Many simple web metronomes use JavaScript timers to play each click, and those timers can slip by tens of milliseconds whenever the browser is busy, which is easy to hear at fast tempos. This metronome uses Web Audio look-ahead scheduling instead. A lightweight timer runs ahead of time and queues clicks on the audio clock, which is driven by the sound hardware, so each click lands exactly on its beat. The result is sample-accurate timing that stays steady even if you switch tabs or the page is doing other work.
Tempo is set with a slider from 30 to 300 BPM, with ±1 buttons for fine adjustment. Tap tempo averages the intervals between your most recent taps, so tapping along with a recording for a few beats gives a reliable reading. The current tempo is labeled with its Italian marking, from Largo for slow tempos through Adagio, Andante, Moderato and Allegro to Presto, which helps when a score gives only a word instead of a number.
Time signatures from 2/4 to 7/4 cover marches, waltzes, common time and odd meters such as 5/4 and 7/4. With the accent enabled, the first beat of each bar plays a higher-pitched click, so you always know where “one” is, and a row of beat indicator dots lights up in sequence for visual tracking. Press the Space bar to start and stop without reaching for the mouse.
| Marking | Meaning | Approximate BPM |
|---|---|---|
| Largo | Broadly, very slow | 40–60 |
| Adagio | Slow, at ease | 66–76 |
| Andante | At a walking pace | 76–108 |
| Moderato | Moderately | 108–120 |
| Allegro | Fast, bright | 120–156 |
| Presto | Very fast | 168–200 |

Use cases
Work on a difficult passage slowly, then raise the tempo a few BPM at a time with the ±1 buttons until you reach performance speed.
Tap along with a recording to read its BPM, then practice with the click at that tempo.
Internalize 5/4 or 7/4 grooves with the accent marking the start of each bar.
Count in a band or keep a home recording in time when no DAW click track is available.
Pro tips
Answers to common questions about the metronome.
Clicks are scheduled ahead of time on the Web Audio clock, which is tied to your audio hardware, rather than on ordinary JavaScript timers. That keeps each beat sample-accurate and free from the drift common in timer-based web metronomes.
Each tap records a time, and the metronome averages the intervals between your recent taps to calculate BPM. Averaging smooths out small inconsistencies in your tapping.
2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4. With the accent on, the first beat of every bar plays a higher click so you can hear where each measure begins.
Yes. The Space bar starts and stops the metronome, which is handy when your hands are on an instrument.
They are traditional Italian tempo markings found in sheet music. Largo is very slow, Adagio slow, Andante walking pace, Moderato moderate, Allegro fast and Presto very fast. The exact BPM ranges vary between sources.
