Need a quick video message, an audition tape or a test of your camera before a meeting? This recorder opens your webcam right in the browser, lets you choose the resolution and keeps every take on your own device until you decide to download it.

Overview
The recorder uses getUserMedia, the browser API that video-call sites use to access your camera and microphone. Your browser asks for permission first, and the camera light turns on only while the page is using it. The live preview is mirrored, like looking into a mirror, because that is what feels natural when you frame yourself. The recorded file itself is saved the right way round, so text on a T-shirt or a sign behind you reads correctly to viewers.
You can request 480p (854×480), 720p (1280×720) or 1080p (1920×1080). The browser negotiates with the camera, so if your webcam tops out at 720p, asking for 1080p gives you the best it can actually deliver. Many built-in laptop cameras are 720p, while most current external USB webcams reach 1080p. Higher resolution captures more detail but also produces larger files; good lighting usually improves quality more than an extra step in resolution.
Encoding happens live through the browser’s MediaRecorder. Chromium browsers and Firefox normally produce WebM with VP8 or VP9 video and Opus audio; Safari typically produces MP4. As an approximate guide, a talking-head clip at 720p often comes out around 10–25 MB per minute, but the real size depends on movement, lighting noise and the browser’s chosen bitrate. Each take appears in a list with playback, so you can record several attempts and keep only the one you like.
| Resolution | Pixels | Typical use | Approx. size per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| 480p | 854 × 480 | Email attachments, quick replies | Roughly 5–12 MB |
| 720p | 1280 × 720 | Video messages, team updates | Roughly 10–25 MB |
| 1080p | 1920 × 1080 | Courses, social video, interviews | Roughly 20–45 MB |
Pick a resolution (480p, 720p or 1080p) and decide whether to include the microphone.
Allow camera and microphone access when the browser asks.
Frame yourself using the mirrored live preview, then click Record.
Pause and resume as needed; the timer shows the recorded length.
Stop the recording, play it back, and download the take you want as WebM or MP4.
Use cases
Record a one-minute update for your team instead of writing a long message, then drop the file into chat or email. Recording at 480p keeps the file small enough for most attachment limits.
Some applications ask for a short self-introduction video. Record several takes, compare them side by side and download only the one you are happy with.
See exactly how your lighting, background and framing look, and hear how your microphone sounds, before joining an important video meeting.
Film a talking-head segment for a course, a product review or a social clip at 1080p, then trim and caption it in a video editor.
Pro tips
Answers to common questions about the webcam recorder.
Only the live preview is mirrored so framing feels natural. The recording is saved unmirrored, which is how other people see you on a video call.
The browser can only deliver resolutions your camera supports. If the webcam’s maximum is 720p, the request for 1080p falls back to the closest available size.
The browser chooses the default camera, usually the one set in your operating system or the browser’s site settings. You can change the default camera in your browser’s permission settings for this site.
Not with this tool, which records the camera only. The Screen + Webcam recorder combines both, with your camera shown as a bubble over the screen capture, and saves them as a single video.
It varies with resolution, movement and your browser’s encoder. A short 720p clip typically runs in the range of 10–25 MB per minute, and 480p is noticeably smaller. The size of every take is shown before you download.
