Before a screenshot or photo goes public, hide what strangers shouldn’t see: email addresses, order numbers, faces or licence plates. Drag boxes over each area, pick pixelate, blur or a solid box, and download a copy where the original pixels are gone for good.

Overview
Redaction means permanently removing information from the pixels, not placing a shape on top of them. This tool offers the three common methods. A solid box replaces every pixel in the area with one colour, black by default, so nothing remains to recover. Pixelation splits the area into square blocks and fills each block with the exact average colour of its pixels. Blur smears the area with a strong Gaussian blur in two passes, which looks softer but keeps more of the overall structure.
Not all methods are equally safe. Researchers have shown that pixelated text can sometimes be reconstructed, because a known font at a known size produces predictable block patterns, and tools such as Depix demonstrate this on screenshots with small blocks. Light blur on small text can also be partly reversed. For passwords, card numbers, IDs, API keys and anything else that must stay secret, use a solid box. Pixelation with large blocks and strong blur are fine for faces in a crowd or a licence plate in the background, where the goal is privacy rather than security.
Each region you draw has its own mode and strength. Click a region to select it, drag it to move it, pull any corner handle to resize it, or press Delete to remove it. Changing the mode, block size, blur radius or box colour affects the selected region, and the Apply to all button copies the current settings to every region at once. Undo and redo (Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Shift+Z) cover every change, and the preview always shows exactly what the export will contain.
Export is irreversible by design. The effect is computed on a canvas at the image’s full resolution and written into the pixels, so the file has no hidden layers and no copy of the original underneath. Because the image is re-encoded as PNG, JPG or WebP, EXIF metadata such as GPS coordinates, camera model and capture time is removed as well. All processing happens on your device, so the unredacted original is never uploaded.
| Method | Recoverable? | Looks | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid box | No | Obvious, clean | Passwords, IDs, card numbers, any text |
| Pixelate, large blocks | Very unlikely | Deliberate mosaic | Faces, licence plates |
| Pixelate, small blocks | Possible for text | Fine mosaic | Non-sensitive details only |
| Strong blur | Unlikely | Soft | Faces, backgrounds |
| Light blur | Possible | Soft, partly legible | Not recommended for secrets |
Paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or drop the image you want to share.
Choose Pixelate, Blur or Solid box, and set the block size, blur radius or box colour.
Drag a rectangle over each sensitive area; move or resize regions with the mouse or arrow keys.
Check the preview, then pick PNG, JPG or WebP and download the redacted copy.
Use cases
Cover email addresses, usernames, order numbers and API keys with solid boxes before posting a screenshot in a forum, a public issue tracker or a support chat.
Pixelate the faces of people in the background of street, event or school photos before publishing them. Large blocks look deliberate and keep the rest of the scene intact.
Blur licence plates and house numbers in photos for marketplace listings, insurance claims or social posts without cropping away the car or building.
Black out card numbers, signatures and home addresses on a photographed receipt or letter before sending it as proof of purchase, and get a copy with location metadata removed.
Pro tips
Answers to common questions about the image redactor.
Sometimes. Weak blur and small-block pixelation of text in a known font can be partly reversed by matching patterns. A solid box can’t be undone because every original pixel in the area is replaced with one colour.
Yes. The exported file contains only the modified pixels. There are no layers or hidden copies, unlike drawing a box over text in a PDF or Word file, where the box can be moved to reveal what is underneath.
No. The image is re-encoded through a canvas, which drops EXIF data such as GPS location, camera details and capture time.
Yes. Each region has its own mode and strength. Select a region to change it, or use Apply to all to give every region the same settings.
Strong blur or large-block pixelation works well when the aim is privacy. For legal or safety-critical anonymization, use a solid box.
No. ToolEnhancer processes files on your own device inside the browser. They are never sent to, stored on or seen by our servers.
